What is a mental health partial hospitalization program?

Understanding PHP for mental health disorders

The partial hospitalization program (PHP) for mental health at Beach House Center for Recovery is a structured day-treatment program. It offers an alternative to 24-hour residential care or serves as a step-down program after inpatient treatment.

Patients in PHP receive therapy and medication management four to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week, while returning home each evening.

How mental health PHP differs from inpatient and outpatient care

A mental health PHP bridges the gap between inpatient and outpatient care. Here are the key differences:

  • Highest intensity: Inpatient/residential treatment program
Provides around-the-clock clinical supervision and medical monitoring. Best for crisis stabilization.
  • Moderate-to-high intensity: PHP
Offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary therapy and medication support during the day, with evenings at home or community housing.
  • Lowest intensity: Outpatient treatment program
Flexible therapy sessions are usually once a week. Best for patients maintaining stability after a more intensive treatment program.

Who benefits from mental health PHP?

PHP is ideal for adults who need daily, structured treatment but do not require around-the-clock supervision. It’s ideal for those:

  • Transitioning from inpatient care
  • Needing high structure and daily support
  • Living with severe mental health symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar or other mental health conditions) that require intensive daily therapeutic support
  • Dealing with co-occurring substance use disorders
  • Seeking to improve coping skills, emotional regulation and overall stability

Beach House Center for Recovery’s partial hospitalization program can also support teens with mental health needs.

Our evidence-based treatment approach

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Our CBT program helps patients identify and change unhelpful thought patterns that drive substance use and mental health challenges. Our licensed clinicians use the following evidence-based techniques to equip patients with practical skills to manage cravings and cope with stress. They include:

  • Cognitive restructuring
  • Problem-solving
  • Relaxation strategies
  • Trauma-focused interventions

CBT is personalized and collaborative, giving patients tools to make healthier choices and reduce relapse risk.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

Our DBT program combines individual therapy and group skills training. Patients learn mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness to manage stress, improve relationships and make healthier decisions.

EMDR for trauma processing

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrated trauma treatment approach that helps patients safely process trauma while building resilience. Combined with CBT and individualized treatment, it addresses the  root causes of mental health challenges.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Our ACT program helps patients accept difficult thoughts and emotions while focusing on meaningful actions aligned with their values. This approach is often used for patients struggling with chronic anxiety or depression.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT)

Our MBCT program blends CBT with mindfulness techniques to prevent depression relapse. Patients learn to stay present and notice negative thought patterns before they take over.

Mental health PHP FAQs

How long does mental health PHP last?

Most patients stay in our mental health PHP for about 30 to 35 days. However, the length of stay depends on your progress and clinical needs. Our goal is to ensure you feel stable before moving to a lower level of care.

Can I work while in PHP?

Because PHP requires 25 to 39 hours per week, most patients find it difficult to work full-time. However, because you return home in the evening, you can still stay connected to your family and personal life.

What’s the difference between PHP and IOP?

PHP is a higher level of care that meets for more hours each day, usually five to seven days a week. It is meant for stabilization. IOP is less intensive, usually meeting for three hours a day, three to five days a week and is better for maintaining progress while returning to work or school.

Do you treat co-occurring disorders?

Yes. We specialize in dual diagnosis treatment. Our team is trained to treat both mental health conditions and substance use disorders at the same time to ensure the best chance for long-term recovery.

Is housing included?

We offer community housing for patients who need a structured and safe place to live while attending our PHP. This is an excellent option for those who do not live near Juno Beach or need to step away from their current environment.

Community housing provides a structured and supportive living environment where patients can focus on recovery while remaining engaged in treatment. This setting promotes stability, accountability, and continued participation in therapeutic programming.

What happens after PHP?

After completing PHP, many patients step down to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). We also provide a robust alumni program to help you stay connected and supported as you transition back into your daily life.
