What is Medical Detox?
Medical detox at Beach House is an intervention that facilitates the removal of chemical substances from the body while managing the accompanying physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms. Medications are oftentimes administered to lessen the effects of withdrawal. The patient is continually monitored by 24-hour nursing staff to ensure the process is as safe and as comfortable as possible.
The physiological phenomenon resulting from continual misuse of alcohol or drugs is medically known as withdrawal syndrome. The body adapts to the presence of depressant or stimulant substances and reconfigures its neurological pathways. When the use of those depressant or stimulant substances is abruptly discontinued, the brain and body readapt to their absence, causing deeply uncomfortable, sometimes dangerous symptoms, depending upon the type of substance.
While not all withdrawal symptoms are the same, withdrawal from alcohol, opiates, and benzodiazepines often include the following complications:
- Muscle pain
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Anxiety
- Sweating
- Hallucinations
- Seizures
- Rapid heart rate
- Disordered sleep
- Tremors
Alcohol withdrawal, particularly after years of addiction, can be especially dangerous. One of the most serious complications from chronic alcohol misuse is delirium tremens.
What is delirium tremens?
Severe alcohol withdrawal can trigger a potentially deadly condition known as delirium tremens, also known as DTS or alcohol withdrawal delirium. This symptom is experienced by approximately 5% of patients undergoing detox from an alcohol dependency.
Delirium tremens is characterized by its extreme medical and psychological effects. While alcohol withdrawal causes significant physical and emotional discomfort, delirium tremens causes dramatic changes to the nervous system that can lead to extensive cognitive deterioration and cardiovascular failure.
Patients who have experienced delirium tremens in the past are at a greater risk of its onset if they return to alcohol use. Without proper medical detox and monitoring, delirium tremens has an anticipated mortality rate of approximately 37%.
What is Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome?
Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) is the onset of symptoms that mimic those of anxiety and mood disorders. While the precise cause of PAWS hasn’t been definitively established, it is believed to result from long-lasting neurological changes from substance misuse and dependence. The symptoms can occur and recur throughout the recovery process, and can include the following:
- Depression
- Sleep disorders
- Anxiety
- Mood fluctuations
- Cognitive difficulty
Between 75% and 90% of patients undergoing medical detox for alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines will experience PAWS, which can recur months and even years after initial withdrawal and treatment. Without close monitoring, medical supervision, and continual support, PAWS symptoms can trigger a return to substance use.
