Is Therapy Covered by Insurance?

When looking for mental health care, it’s often the cost of therapy that inhibits people from seeking out the treatment they need. Thankfully, many insurance providers offer benefits to make this more affordable. While each healthcare plan differs slightly in the services they include, most provide partial coverage of therapy and other behavioral health services. However, it’s important to be aware of potential out-of-pocket costs when deciding where to go for treatment.

Mental Health Insurance Coverage

Mental health services are often included in standard healthcare plans. In fact, under the Affordable Care Act, all Health Insurance Marketplace plans must provide these in their benefits. The goal of the Affordable Care Act was to increase the number of insured people in the United States, making healthcare more affordable and accessible. While it’s still an imperfect system, this has made it possible for more people to get the physical and emotional help they need.

Plans provided by an employer will vary in coverage, but some of the most common services that are included are:

  • Outpatient therapy
  • Residential treatment
  • Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs

The main differentiator between healthcare plans is how much of each service is covered. For example, some may require a copay or payment up to a person’s deductible before the provider pays. Other companies may limit the number of sessions or time in treatment that they will allow.

Finding Covered Mental Health Care Services

There are a few different ways to determine what behavioral health care is offered by specific insurance plans. First, each provider will either have a toll-free number or an online portal where people can look at their benefits. These websites offer a lot of valuable information, but it can be difficult to parse through it. If it feels overwhelming, calling a local representative or the nationwide number may be helpful. They often have people available who can answer specific questions.

Another option is to look at a specific therapist or treatment center to see what insurance plans they accept. Some will list these on their website or have a form to fill out to verify coverage. Because each center has slightly different treatment options, they are often well-equipped to answer questions related to financing their services.
