12 Days of Giving: How Beach House and Two Local Moms Aim to Save More Lives in the Opiate Epidemic

Staci Katz and Cindy Singer are two moms in our local Florida community who are here to make a difference. We at Beach House are happy to be a part of their mission. This is why we launched our 12 Days of Giving Campaign. During the month of December, we granted 12 scholarships to individuals seeking treatment for opiate addiction. Watch Staci and Cindy’s touching story and learn more about our campaign, below.

Since the launch last month of Beach House Center for Recovery’s 12 Days of Giving campaign, 12 young people in need have received 14 days of opiate detox and stabilization, free of charge, at Beach House’s Juno Beach-based treatment facility.

“These are 12 young people who are going to have a chance,” said Micah Robbins, Director of Special Projects for the Palm Beach County Substance Awareness Coalition. Robbins described the Beach House initiative as “not talk but action” in response to a national drug epidemic that reportedly claimed more than 64,000 lives in the year 2016 alone.

Beach House launched the 12 Days of Giving campaign in December 2017, in partnership with two local “moms on a mission”—Staci Katz and Cindy Singer, whose own fundraising initiative through “Go Fund Me” (“A Birthday Present for Rory”) has raised nearly $5,000 to support recovering opiate addicts just out of treatment in the transition to a sober living environment.

Katz and Singer first connected through the shared experience of having sons who battled opiate addiction and a parenting journey marked by pain, struggle and loss. (Dillon is in early recovery, and Cory, who last month would have turned 31, died from a heroin and fentanyl overdose in October 2015.)

When Katz and Singer, both members of the Palm Beach County Substance Awareness Coalition, shared their idea of a fundraiser on behalf of recovering opiate addicts just out of treatment, Beach House “stepped up to the plate,” Robbins said. 12 Days of Giving—in the form of 12 more saved lives in a public health crisis—was the inspiring result.
